UN Security Council statement, on the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17

SC/11480 The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims, and to the people and Governments of all those killed in the crash in eastern Ukraine on 17 July of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The members of the Security Council called for a full, thorough and independent international investigation into the incident in accordance with the international civil aviation guidelines  and for appropriate accountability.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which provides the international legal framework for the investigation of air accidents should have a central role, ensuring that there is credible and independent international involvement.

“We welcome the indications from the Ukrainian authorities that they want international investigators to join their efforts”, say UK Ambassador Lyall Grant to the Security Council meeting . The United Kingdom will provide whatever assistance is necessary to support this investigation.

The members of the Security Council further stressed the need for all parties to grant immediate access by investigators to the crash site to determine the cause of the incident.
