The situation in Iraq is going from bad to worse. Flowing last night´s news the stakes for Iraq´s future could not be clearer after recent terror attacks by the militants of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant against the innocent, including Yezedi and Christian minorities, and ISIL´s grotesque and targeted acts of violence bear all the warning signs and hallmarks of genocide under international law.
At this point, ISIS is more terrorist army than terrorist group. World can not sit by and watch innocents die. Iraq´s leaders, U.S, United Nations and the European Union need to save and support the Government and people of Iraq and to do all it can to help alleviate the suffering, especially those innocent persons affected by the current conflict in Iraq.
They must confront the growing humanitarian and security crisis with the urgency that it demand. In order to liberate those innocent people from such an odious scourge international co-operation is required.
As evident to all, the Central Government of Iraq is incapable of enforcing law and order in this part of the country. There are also doubts about the capacity of the Kurdistan Region alone to defend the fierce advance of jihadists.
- Under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, that could be considered enough to trigger an obligation under international law to intervene to prevent a genocide form occurring.
The humanitarian situation remains dire and the situation highly fluid. Many families are trapped in the mountains on the border with Syria. Humanitarian airdrops have been announced by the United States, according to IOM sources.
