EP ratifies EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Historic day for Ukraina – free democracy.

Historic day for Ukraina today, as The European Parliament gave its consent to the EU-Ukraine Association agreement, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA), on Tuesday in Strasbourg. At the same time, the Agreement was also ratified by the Ukrainian Parliament in Kiev.

The political provisions take Ukraine one step closer to the EU, by opening new channels for political dialogue and establishing ground rules for cooperation.

This is free democracy, the opposite of directed democracy. It is also very important for Poroshenko´s opportunity to go forward with his peace plan. “The European Parliament has always defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and will continue to do so” said EP President Martin Schulz in his address to MPs in the Strasbourg and Kiev chambers via a video link.

The global wave of democratization in the 1990s has dramatically increased the role of the citizenry in many of the new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The prospect of European Union (EU) membership is often considered the most successful instrument for the promotion of democracy in post-communist countries. – this contributes to peace, stability and development on our continent.

Ukrainian society has paid the highest price for its European aspirations. Through this ratification, Ukraine’s European choice will be institutionalized and will bind the futures of the EU and Ukraine together.
